John USA

Psoriasis Cure Now Launches Letter Writing Campaign to New Congress

KENSINGTON, Md., Jan. 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "Psoriasis Cure
Now," a nonprofit patient advocacy group, today launched an online
letter
writing campaign to the new Congress to win Congressional support for
increased research on psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. While Congress
has
doubled funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) over the
last
decade, psoriasis research funding has declined. People can write to
their
lawmakers directly through the Psoriasis Cure Now website at

http://www.psoriasis-cure-now.org .

"Psoriasis is a serious and painful disease of the immune system,
but
research funding has been lacking for years," said Michael Paranzino,
president of Psoriasis Cure Now. "The start of the new Congress, with
more
than 50 new lawmakers and a mandate from voters for change, offers us
the
best chance in years to close the psoriasis research funding shortfall.
We
hope the letters Americans will send through our website will catch the
attention of the new Congress and bring hope to the as many as 7.5
million
Americans with psoriasis."
The National Institutes of Health is the world's premier biomedical
research institution, with an annual budget approaching $30 billion.
Psoriasis research receives about $6.5 million of that, despite the
profoundly negative impact that psoriasis often has on quality of life.
For
example, a recent study in the British Journal of Dermatology found
that
children with psoriasis report impairment in their quality of life that
equals the impairment reported by children with other chronic illnesses
including asthma, epilepsy and diabetes. Studies in adults have
produced
similar results, with a 1999 study finding that "Patients with
psoriasis
reported reduction in physical functioning and mental functioning
comparable to that seen in cancer, arthritis, hypertension, heart
disease,
diabetes, and depression." New research also suggests that people with
psoriasis are at higher risk for heart disease and heart attack.
"Everyone interested in a cure for psoriasis should visit our
website
and write their lawmakers today," Paranzino added. "If the American
people
speak loudly and clearly, Congress will respond favorably."
